Erasmus+ Student Mobility Traineeship (SMT)


Students and graduates interested in an ERASMUS+ Traineeship at the Medical University of Graz within the framework of the ERASMUS+ Program: please send an email to the contact person to begin the placement process.

The request should be sent 7 to 8 months before the start of the traineeship at the latest. Stays in teaching hospitals are an exception to this rule, but students should contact the coordinator as soon as the placment has been confirmed.


Clinical rotations at the Medical University of Graz generally comprise the following tasks:

  • integration to staff at the respective clinical department
  • observation and participation in examinations, treatments and clinical rounds (German skills may be required in certain departments and divisions)
  • analysis and presentation of clinical cases
  • learning about the Austrian health care model


Students agree to follow the regular routine at the respective departments:

  • daily presence is expected from 8 am to 4 pm or as directed by department staff
  • 85% minimum attendance (please note that the minimum stay of 9 weeks has to be fulfilled)

Confirmations of stay are only to be issued by the International Office and may only be issued 3 working days before or after the end of the traineeship (no exceptions!), if the above-mentioned criteria are fulfilled.

Available fields and departments

  • Department of Anaesthesiology: German skills are mandatory
  • Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery: German skills are mandatory
  • Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics: Places for students are only available during official vacation time (February, July-September). Duration: 4 weeks only!
  • Department of Internal Medicine: minimum duration 4 weeks! German skills (level B2) are mandatory for all divisions. Please select your preferred specialities and name some alternative. 
  • Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine: Places for students are only available within the framework of the Educational Courses in Peadiatric Medicine in February and July - Duration: 4 weeks
  • Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapeutic Medicine: German skills at least level B2 are mandatory
  • Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma: German skills are mandatory
  • Division of Vascular Surgery: German skills are mandatory
  • Emergency Medicine: please apply for Internal Medicine/EBA

Accident and Liability Insurance

Students will be enrolled at the Medical University of Graz to ensure proper accident and liability insurance and to give you access to our library and other student facilities.
For this enrollment, the fee for the Austrian Students' Union has to be paid (at the moment: 20.20 EUR) on time.
